The purpose of this undergraduate paper will be comparing work/life balance between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Statistics will be based around the United States of America because of their higher quality and availability. The statistics that we will be comparing will be the number/percentage of employed personnel in the three main industries (primary, secondary and tertiary); apart from those statistics we will be looking at the purchasing power of employed personnel in the various sectors and compare what kind of effect it had on the socio-economic standing between both centuries. Comparing various statistics we can discern that there has been a large transition between the workforce moving from the primary sector into the tertiary sector which brings in a much larger percentage of the gross domestic product in most developed countries. After comparing the statistics we will be analyzing the quality of workers rights and the complicity of the jobs in each industry. A large number of factors had an affect on the mental health of employees, the main ones we will be focusing on is the demand for increased production at the expense of the “working class” people as well as the development of new technologies and new means of communication and what kind of effect they had on the job market. Based on the analysis of all the factors we can conclude which elements had the greatest impact on the job market as well as which factors led to the sudden shift of employees within the industries. After choosing the topic for this undergraduate paper the world has been struck by the third biggest pandemic in history which changed the job market forever, from new possibilities of working from home for a company that is not even on the same continent to the discrimination of “essential workers” of the tertiary industry. As a conclusion to the paper the job market has drastically changed between the centuries, but the rights and needs of employees were not being adjusted which led to consequences that we are still dealing with today.
