Abstract Posljednjih nekoliko desetljeća svjedoci smo ubrzanog razvoja informacijskih tehnologija. No, unatoč tehnološkom razvoju, najvrjedniji oblik komunikacije je i dalje onaj licem u lice. Svjesnost o vlastitim osjećajima omogućuje nam kontrolu vlastitih reakcija, a ujedno doprinosi i razumijevanju drugih.
Abstract (english) Over the last few decades, we have been witnessing fast development of information technologies. The exchange of information has never been so fast and through so many diverse ways as it is today. However, even though technology has improved by a lot, the most valuable form of communication is still face-to-face. Everything said in words achieves its complete value only when in synergy with the elements of our visual expression. Emotions (feelings) are what moves us from the inside. Thanks to them, we have survived and evolved throughout history. They are manifested in the same way for humans and animals. In this paper, we will discuss what emotions are, what their role is in nonverbal communication, how they are manifested, how to recognize them and how they influence relationships in general. We will also take a look at the scientists that built the foundations for further research, as well as those which took that research to a whole new level. Since emotions don’t always occur in the same way and intensity for everyone, some tools for measuring, recognition and classifying emotions have been developed. It was discovered that there are seven basic, inborn emotions, that have been assigned with facial expressions which are known to everyone and can be simulated. Micro-expressions are a completely different type of expressions, which are almost unnoticeable and occur when we want to hide how we truly feel. The tendency to beautify, fictionalize and deceive is specific to humans. We will talk about the reasons behind that kind of behaviour, expressions that betray a liar and all other indicators in the rest of the paper. By learning about our emotions, we get to know ourselves and others, because emotions shape us and guide us therefore creating our inner world. By being aware of our feelings, we are able to control our reactions and better understand reactions of other people. Negative, destructive emotions cannot be a good foundation for further development of society, mutual understanding and empathy.
