Should children play sports, when should they start and should playing sports be an essential part in the life of every child are questions to which many parents are searching for answers on a daily basis. How to identify what is best for the child, should they be guided by parents or experts? How to recognize if it is a good choice, should children be left to choose completely on their own or should they be directed according to the wishes of the parents? Should parents listen to a friend, a coach, a professor? In the desire to make the best for our loved ones, the real purpose and goal of engaging in physical activity is often forgotten. Pedagogues, coaches, parents play an important role in the development of young people and their psychosocial development by playing sports. Can children who do not play sports be healthy and how much does sport affect their overall health? This paper seeks to answer these questions through historical facts that bear witness to the importance of physical education up to the present when playing sports has become a commercial project and is not equally accessible to all. The attitude towards sport in the European Union will be compared, whether we follow global trends and how far we lag behind other countries. On the author's own example, an attempt will be made to bring closer, at least partially, what it means to raise young athletes and what it is like to be a mentor and parent to children who have been in sports from kindergarten to the present.
