Access to complete and transparent information is of utmost importance to the society of each state. Journalists are an important link in informing the public and they are expected to adhere to professional ethical principles, with an emphasis on the truthfulness of information. But, the fact is that fake news has increasingly appeared in the media, which is the subject of this paper. The appearance of so-called „fake news“ - new manipulation techniques will be explained through the historical cross section, examples, experts' thoughts and result from some research. The media used to be a reliable source of information, but with the appearance of fake news and disinformation, they are destroying its own reputation. Social networks as particularly well-suited media for rapid spreading of disinformation contribute to the awareness that "fake news" has begun to threaten society and democracy globally. Disinformation undermines citizens' confidence in democracy and democratic institutions and has contributed to the polarization of public views and interference with the decision-making process, which are more than justified reasons for urgent and harsh decisions to suppress the spread of disinformation in the media. By becoming aware of seriousness of the situation, states and various organizations make strategic plans and decisions to combat the spread of disinformation. The term "fake news" was popularized by US President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. There is whole study and research on the topic that shows statistics about fake news, voters’ behaviour, i.e., viewers who watched the election through the media. It can be concluded that there are two types of fake news. First type of fake news are spread without bad and manipulative intentions because they have been spread by people who do not know that information is false, but still believe in it. The second type is disinformation, information that is spread deliberately and attempts to confuse or manipulate people. Both type of fake news are a problem for society, but disinformation are particularly dangerous.
