The availability of energy supply is a precondition of economic development of every country while developing energy industry and securing energy independence is a primary long-term task of every goverment. With gaining independence in 1991., the Republic of Croatia has faced a position where she had to develop its own energy sector based on numerous possibilities arising from the existing non-renewable energy sources and potential untapped renewable sources of energy. From the early negotiations on the entrty of RH to EU in 2005. To the very accession to EU membership, energy policy in RH has underwent vast changes in legislative framework. In turn, it has influenced the changes in the direction of increased use of energy from renewable sources and in the application of energy efficiency in nearly all relevant branches of economy. The aim of this paper is to give an account on the EU energy policy and its impact on the policy of RH through an overview of legislative framework changes by comparative analysis of the state of energy industry in the EU member countries and RH. It also shows a high degree of correlation and clearly points out substantial changes in energy policy following the accession to EU with emphasis on energy industry potentials that need to be developed in the future in order to boost the economy and achieve energy independence.
