The paper contains the analysis of symbolic meanings of hair and tradition and is based on the assumption that elements of the heritage of a particular culture, in this case it is hair, are a kind of tools for communication between members of a particular culture as well as between different cultures. In this light, the paper first analyzes the multiple meanings of hair in different cultures and historical periods within the framework of visual communication. In particular, they deal with the symbolism of covering the head and hair in the context of different religions and beliefs, and the wig as a symbol that marked an entire period. The main part of the work deals with traditional hairstyles and headdresses in the territory of Croatia, which is divided into four regions. An overview of the changes that traditional hairstyles go through in accordance with changes in social circumstances is provided, and the conclusion that traditional hairstyles are a reflection of social movements of historical periods and areas is imposed. Braids, red decorative ribbons and other elements are mentioned as common to all hairstyles in the Republic of Croatia, and the numerous differences mentioned point to a great cultural diversity in accordance with numerous external influences throughout history.
