A consumer is a person or an entity that buys and consumes available products or services offered in a particular market. Consumer protection contains law clauses, which aim to protect the interest of consumers. An important aspect of consumer protection is providing information to educate consumers about their rights and obligations. Public authorities, as lawmakers, play an important role in the implementation of the consumers’ rights. In history, consumer protection existed only formally, on paper. Greater progress has been made since the founding of the European Union. European Commission prepared the Consumer Program for the period from 2014 to 2020, and is currently preparing a new European Consumer Agenda. The Republic of Croatia, as a member state, has a binding task to harmonize Croatian legislation with EU directives to enable the normal functioning of the common European market. Still, it should be emphasized that consumers are the most important stakeholders and their voices must be heard. Nowadays, in a democratic society, where all information is easily reachable, and everyone can state their opinion, consumers should take responsibility and stand for their rights, report problems, or possible unfair actions. The key to successful consumer protection is in consumer awareness!
